Cloud forest
Monteverde and Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserves, along with the smaller Curi-Cancha Wildlife Refuge, protect the cool, mist-wrapped forest on the Continental Divide across the lake from La Fortuna. Reaching them means either the roughly three-hour jeep-boat-jeep crossing over Lake Arenal or a three-and-a-half to four-hour drive that includes a long stretch of unpaved road 702.
