Boat tours through the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, a wetland roughly ninety minutes north near the Nicaraguan border, turn up caimans, howler monkeys and wading birds along the Río Frío. Closer to town, the Bogarín Trail delivers sloths and toucans without the drive.
