Things to do on the Balsa River
The Balsa River is La Fortuna's whitewater rafting run, a Class II-III stretch guided by licensed outfitters through jungle canyons about 45 minutes to an hour from town. 5 hour outing on the water. Half-day packages, including transport, run around 75 to 100 USD per person.
This is not a beginner's float or a family paddle with small children; guides expect participants to be reasonably fit, able to swim, and able to follow rapid-fire safety instructions once the current picks up. Water levels shift with the rainy season, so the exact rapids you get vary by month.
