Things to do at the Bijagua sloth sanctuaries

Bijagua, about 1h30 to 2h from La Fortuna on the road toward the Tenorio volcano, is home to a handful of small sloth sanctuaries built around guided viewing rather than a zoo enclosure: guides who know the resident two- and three-toed sloths' current territory lead you along short forest trails, usually 1 to 2 hours, with a spotting scope for the high canopy.

Expect to pay roughly 25-40 USD per person, and book ahead in the dry season (December to April) when tour groups from La Fortuna and Rio Celeste add to the small local capacity. Sightings are close to guaranteed here precisely because the guides track known individuals day to day, which is not the case on a random forest trail elsewhere in the region.
