Things to do at Poás Volcano

Poás Volcano rises to 2,708 metres and holds one of the most accessible active craters anywhere, but access is not automatic: SINAC sells entry in timed slots that must be booked in advance, and popular windows sell out days ahead.

Visitors get a limited period at the crater rim, hard hats are compulsory near the viewpoint, and the park closes without notice when gas activity spikes, sometimes for hours, occasionally for the day.

From La Fortuna the drive runs about 2h15 along mountain roads, so this is usually paired with an early departure rather than a spontaneous stop. Cloud cover is common by mid-morning, and no operator can guarantee a clear crater view on any given slot.
