Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) sits outside Liberia, Guanacaste, and is Costa Rica's second gateway alongside Juan Santamaria near San Jose. From LIR, La Fortuna is roughly 2h30 to 3h by road, depending on the route and traffic through Guanacaste's back roads.

Many visitors land at LIR because it is closer to Pacific beaches and the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, not because it shortens the trip to La Fortuna the way flying into San Jose often does on paper.
