Things to do at Curi-Cancha Reserve

Curi-Cancha is the birder's alternative to the crowded Monteverde and Santa Elena reserves, with shorter, more open trails that make spotting resplendent quetzals, hummingbirds and toucans genuinely easier than deep cloud forest. Entry runs about 20-24 USD, and the loop trails cover roughly 5 km of mixed forest and pasture edge, walkable in 2 to 3 hours.

It sits about 3 h 30 min to 4 h from La Fortuna by road, or roughly 3 h via the jeep-boat-jeep across Lake Arenal. Quetzal sightings peak from February to July across the whole Monteverde area, not just here, so timing your visit matters more than which reserve you pick.

Daily visitor numbers are capped, and self-guided access is allowed without a mandatory guide, unlike some neighbouring reserves.
