Things to do in Santa Elena
Santa Elena is the working village next to Monteverde, and the base most visitors actually sleep in: more restaurants, more budget and mid-range hotels, and the closest town centre to the Santa Elena Reserve, about a 10-15 minute drive or a manageable uphill walk.
From La Fortuna the road journey runs 3 h 30 to 4 h over roughly 130 km, much of it unpaved, or about 3 h by the jeep-boat-jeep crossing over Lake Arenal. Santa Elena sits near 1,400 m, so evenings are cool, and cloud cover can roll in at any hour year-round.
Treat it as your logistics hub for tours, transport and food, not as a sight in itself.
